Hermann Hendrich was a very well-known German symbolist painter of the turn of the 20th century. Working first as an actor in various theatres, he later became a painter. He studied from 1886 to 1889 under Wenglein in Munich and Bracht in Berlin, where he also stayed to work. Hendrich was influenced by the works of Richard Wagner and Norwegian nature and became popular as a painter of mystical subjects taking part in various exhibitions. Already during his lifetime his works were bought by the greatest German museums and today some museums have entire "Hendrich halls".
This work is one of the ten illustrations to the " Fairy Tale" by Goethe (see: "Das Märchen" von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe with 10 colour illustrations after paintings by Hermann Hendrich; Leipzig 1921 (colour illustration on p.2)).
