(please note additional 10% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

Original German title of this painting is "Die Schauspielerin Betti Probst/Barbara Gräfin von Castiglione" (in english translation: "The Actress Betti Probst/Countess Barbara von Castiglione").
This very important painting of Friedrich von Amerling was under exponats of the Amerling-Exhibition in the Austrian National Gallery "Belvedere" from 26 March to 22 June 2003, detailled described and full-page illustrated in the exhibition catalogue!
The curator of the 19th century paintings in this museum and organizer of this exhibition Dr. Sabine Grabner wrote about our sitter in the catalogue: "Betti (Barbara) Probst was born in 1835 in Vienna. It is possible that she was the "Frl. Probst" mentioned in the German Theater Almanach of 1854 to have acted in "Erste Localgesangsparthieen in Posse und Vaudevilles"(First Sing Festival in Burlesque and Vaudeville) in the Gräflichen Skarbekschen Theater in Lemberg. In 1856 a certain "Frl. Betti Probst" was to be found in the actors list of the Carl Theater in Vienna, back then under direction of the famous Austrian author Johann Nestroy. At first she played smaller roles as the Dorothea in Nestroy's "Eulenspiegel or Schabernack über Schabernack", but soon she quickly became a favorite actress of the public for her beautiful voice and her talent for comedy. Her most important role was the female principal in Nestroy's parody of Tannhaeuser. The actress seems to soon have married, then the Viennese author Wurzbach reports: a certain Countess Castiglione sang with success in the fifties under the name "Fraeulein Probst" in the Carl Theater in Vienna. Her husband was the landlord Count Josef von Castiglione, born in 1800 in Lemberg (sic!), who spent his last years as retired Fieldmarshall-lieutenant in Graz... (We believe he has seen his future love for the first time in his native Lemberg and then brought her to Vienna, where he possibly helped her to join Nestroy's ensemble) ...Countess Barbara von Castiglione born Probst died on 9 April 1868 in Vienna."
The painting is fully described in the Amerling-Monographie of Guenther Probszt ("Friedrich von Amerling. Der Altmeister der Wiener Portraitmalerei") in Chapter "Complete Works - Catalogue" under No. 952 as painted in 1858. As provenance the author mentions the collection of the Viennese Architect Hubert Gangl, then Auction Nr. 280 of the Viennese "Dorotheum" (lot Nr. 898 with Illustration). We know the painting has been bought at this auction by Professor Martin, Vienna. In 2000 our gallery acquired it from his grandnephew.

Friedrich von Amerling (1803 Vienna - 1887 ibid.) was an outstanding Austrian portrait painter of the 19th century. In 1816-1823 he studied at the Vienna Academy. In mid 1820s he travelled to London intending to get acquainted with Thomas Lawrence, who was considered the greatest portrait painter of the time. Lawrence allowed the young artist to visit his studio and to continue his education after the master's accomplished works. 11 months later F.von Amerling moved to Paris, where he was friendly received by Horace Vernet. After his return to Vienna he soon became one of the most popular portraitists of the Austrian high society. He worked in Italy in 1831 and 1841-44. Around 1000 portraits created by the artist are known to exist; many of them are now missing. Works of F.von Amerling are displayed in the greatest museums worldwide.

The paintings of this artist achieve lately very high prices at the international art auction market - up to USD 300,000 (see our additional images)!!! As last image we show the Loan Agreement of the Austrian National Gallery issued upon the delivery of the painting to the mentioned show in 2003.

P.S.: On October 15th 2008, Amerling's painting "Girl with straw hat" was sold at Vienna Auction House "Dorotheum" for 1.5 mln Euro (over USD$ 2 mln!!! - see our last additional image).
