19th century impression of the famous engraving by Johann Elias Ridinger (1698 Ulm - 1767 Augsburg).
Johann Elias Ridinger (1698 Ulm-1767 Augsburg) received his first art training from his father Johann Ridinger and from 1711 studied under the painter Christian Resch. He then moved to Augsburg in ca.1713/14 to study under the animal and flower painter Joh. Falch. During this time in Augsburg, Ridinger first started painting animals, especially horses. He then moved on to Regensburg for three years, to further learn animal painting. Back in Augsburg (ca.1718/19) he became a student of George Phil. Rugendas the Elder at the Academy. Paralelly he worked with the graphic artist Joh. Daniel Herz. Ready with his studies, Ridinger married the widow of the painter Joh. Seuter in 1923. In 1759 he became the director of the Augsburger Academy.
