We are dealing here with the best miniature of Emmanuel Thomas Peter in our large collection of his works. Painted by this miniaturist in 1846, it is a wonderful portrait of 32-year-old Maria-Clara Countess Zichy, nee Marquise de Ville, Countess Demblin (our image nr.8 shows her 10 years prior, just after the wedding).
Maria-Clara was born on August 5, 1814 at her mother family's estate in Slovakian town Batfeld (now - Bardejov) and died on August 26, 1868 in Zichy family castle in Voderady (now Vedröd, Slovakia - see our image nr.16).
Her father, August (Philips August Gabriel) Marquis de Ville (1776-1857) was a member of an ancient noble family from Nancy, France. After the French Revolution, he lived in Austria as an émigré; and in 1812, married a woman from well-known Polish family Mniszch - Countess Isabelle Vandalin Mniszech (1790-1859; it was Countess' second marriage).
Maria Clara rose in her mother family's castle in Silesian town Demblin (then - Austrian Empire; now - Deblin in Poland; see our images nr.14-15). In 1837, she married three years her senior Franz (Ferenc Seraphikus Johann Nepomuk) Count Zichy (1811-1900; see our image nr.17), by then - already a high-ranking Hungarian official. In 1839, she was awarded the "Sternkreuzorden" (Austrian Ladies Order of Star Cross) and became a "Palastdame" (a lady admitted at the court). She and her husband had four sons, two of whom made - alike their father - a spectacular career (see our images nr.18-19).
Back in 1816, Maria-Clara's father (along with children) was ennobled by the Russian Tsar to Count Demblin. In 1848, Austrian state also confirmed his son and daughter (!) as count and countess Demblin.
Emanuel Thomas Peter (1799 Jaegerndorf - 1873 Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian portrait miniaturist of the 19th century. From 1818 he studied at the Vienna Academy, at first architecture and then miniature painting under the famous Moritz Michael Daffinger. He copied a lot of Daffinger's miniatures with such artistic skill, that it is often impossible to distinguish between copies and originals. After a stay in Silezia Peter returned to Vienna in 1830 and became there one of the leading miniaturists. His best works were created between 1830 and 1850s.
Our images nr.20-24 show several works of this artist that were offered at the international art auction market in the last years.
