Signed with the artist's regularly-used monogram (ligated "CS" with symbol of a sword) and dated "1826", this small oil-on-panel painting is a work of well-known German, 19th-century artist, Johann Karl Schultz.
The painting portrays a scene, in which Russian Cossacks are seen on the river bank, asking for directions from a passerby. It is an episode from the so-called Foreign Campaign of the Russian Army, which took place in 1813 on the territory of modern Germany (among Germans, it was known as the "anti-Napoleonic Liberation War").
Johann Karl (Carl) Schltz was born in 1803 in Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) and died in the same city in 1873. He began his studies at the Danzig Academy under Johann Adam Breysig; from 1820, he attended the Academy of Berlin, where he trained with Johann Erdmann Hummel. In 1823, he moved to Munich, where he then studied architectural painting under Lorenzo Quaglio. In 1824, he made a study trip to Italy and remained there until 1828. Thereafter, he came to Berlin and - in 1832 - once again to Danzig, where he succeeded Breysig as Director of the Danzig Art School.
