Johann Karl Schultz (1803-1873) "Russian Cossacks in Germany (1813)", small oil painting, 1826 2200 EUR Signed with the artist's regularly-used monogram (ligated "CS" with symbol of a sword) and dated "1826", this small oil-on-panel painting is a work of well-known German, 19th-century artist, Johann Karl Schultz.
Johann Karl (Carl) Schltz was born in 1803 in Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) and died in the same city in 1873. He began his studies at the Danzig Academy under Johann Adam Breysig; from 1820, he attended the Academy of Berlin, where he trained with Johann Erdmann Hummel. In 1823, he moved to Munich, where he then studied architectural painting under Lorenzo Quaglio. In 1824, he made a study trip to Italy and remained there until 1828. Thereafter, he came to Berlin and - in 1832 - once again to Danzig, where he succeeded Breysig as Director of the Danzig Art School. Our images nr.10-11 show two of Schultz' other works showing Russian Cossacks in Germany.
