This large miniature on ivory was executed in 1924 in Buenos Aires by Russian émigré artist Aaron Bilis who was living in Argentina at the time. One year later (1925), this work was shown at the exhibition "Miniatures de Aaron Bilis" at the Association des Amis de l'art (Cat. No. 19).
It shows celebrated Italian opera soprano Claudia Muzio (1889-1936; see our image nr.8 and CLICK HERE) performing the role of Violetta in "La Traviata" (for a 1935 audio record of this opera, CLICK HERE).
Aaron Bilis based this miniature portrait on a photograph of the singer (see our image nr.9).

Aaron Bilis was born on July 29, 1893 (or 1896) in a Jewish family in Odessa (then - Russian Empire; now - Ukraine), and died in Porto, Portugal in April of 1971.
He studied at the Odessa Art School before 1909, then moved to Paris, where he continued his studies at Academie Cormon until 1915. During that period, he took part in the exhibition of "Association of Russian students" in Paris (1913) and collaborated with "Revue de Monde".
In 1914, he volunteered to join the French Army, but was withdrawn due to partial right arm disability.
In 1915, he immigrated to Argentina and became its citizen; he retained this citizenship until the end of his life. Until 1928, Bilis lived primarily in Buenos Aires, where he contributed to newspaper "La Nacion" as a graphic artist and was employed as a stage designer of Theater "Colon".
In that period, he also specialized in painting portrait miniatures in 19th-century style, as well as large-scale Impressionist paintings. He regularly participated in Argentina's national exhibitions, exhibited in Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile. In 1828, he returned to Paris and established himself as one of the artists of the School of Montparnasse. He counted among his friends such important artists as Chagall, Zadkine, Mane-Katz and other artists of Russian origin.
He also participated in the exhibitions of the "Salon des artistes français" (1930), "Salon d'automne" (1933-1968) and the "Salon des Indépendants" (1965, 1970). Similarly, he showed his works in various places in France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
During the WWII, he and his family were hiding in his small village house in department Ariege at the Franco-Spanish border.
After the war, he was awarded the Commander Cross of Spanish Order of Isabella, the Chevalier Cross of French Legion of Honor, the Officer Cross of Order of Academic Palms, the silver medal of the City of Paris, and the Golden Medal of National Salon.
He died in Portugal during one of his exhibition tours. His body was brought back to France and laid to rest (next to his wife) at the Parisian Montparnasse Cemetery.
A memorial exhibition was held in his honor at the "Salon des Indépendants" in 1972. The Louvre collection of graphic works houses 500 engravings by Aaron Bilis. Some of his works also belong to the collection of the library-museum of Parisian theater "Comédie-Française" (also, CLICK HERE).
