This 1873 watercolor was executed by well-known Munich artist Fritz Birkmeyer. It is one of the 7-piece-series with scenes from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, for which the artist volunteered to serve in ranks of the 12th Bavarian Infantry Regiment (see his biography below).
The watercolor, which is presented here, shows the 12th Regiment engaged in fight at the square of one of the French towns (probably identifiable through its church dome - see the background of the composition).

Fritz Birkmeyer (1848 Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria - 1897 Munich) began his artistic activity as a glass painter in 1863, when he joined the studio of Bernhard Mittermaier in Launingen, Bavaria. Shortly thereafter, he attended the art school in Nuremberg. Later, he worked at various glass studios in Munich. In 1863, besides working as an artist, he volunteered to join and was assigned to the 12th Bavarian Infantry Regiment and, in its ranks, partook in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 (it was the war between the Second French Empire and the German states of the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia - CLICK HERE). During the Battle of Coulmiers (November 9, 1870), he was wounded five (!) times and had to spend the next six months in a hospital. After his discharge from the army, Birkmeyer returned to being a glass painter and continued to work in the Munich studio of Franz Xaver Zettler. Apart from that, he began working as an illustrator of various military books (sic!) and tried his hand in oil painting. Many of his works from this period are reminiscent of the artist's own war experiences from 1870.
