Travelling case with oil on copper miniature portrait of Princess Mary of Orange-Nassau with so-called "garderobe" - 14 mica overlays.

"This is an example of an unusual amusement that came into fashion after about 1650. It consists of an oil miniature painted on copper and set in a leather case. Accompanying the miniature are a number of costume details painted in opaque colour on slivers of transparent mineral known at the time as 'talc'. In fact, the little costume sheets are pieces of mica. This is a mineral that splits easily into thin yet very tough and flexible flakes, as transparent as glass. These 'talcs' matched the oil miniature in shape and size, so that the owner could dress up the subject in different costumes by laying on the 'talcs' one at a time. We do not know where these miniatures were manufactured, but they are found throughout Europe…" (this text is borrowed from the description of a similar object in collection of Victoria & Albert Museum in London (CLICK HERE; also CLICK HERE, for a similar set in the collection of the National Museum of Wales).

Mary Henrietta Stuart, Royal Princess of Orange-Nassau (1631-1660) was the eldest daughter of King Charles I of England. She was the wife of Willem II of Orange.-Nassau (1626-1650). Mary Stuart or Mary of Orange as she was also known, was the first daughter of a British sovereign to hold the title Royal Princess (designated by Charles I in 1642).

For another portrait of this member of royalty in our collection see our web # 29606.

As convincingly demonstrates our comparison image nr.36 this "garderobe" was made by well-known Flemish, 17th century artist Gonzales Coques.

Gonzales Coques (1614 Antwerp - 1684 ibidem) was a pupil of Pieter Brueghel II or III in 1626/7. He was probably also a pupil of D. Ryckaert, whose daughter he married in 1643. Coques became a master in the Antwerp Guild in 1640/1. An accomplished portrait painter, he was greatly influenced by Rubens and Van Dyck, although his figures were generally on a smaller scale, and he enjoyed the patronage of successive Governor Generals of the Netherlands. Among his sponsors were also foreign royalties and high aristocrats: for example, Charles I of England commissioned him with many portraits.
