Carl Josef Alois Agricola "Ballerina Marie Taglioni", ca. 1825, important discovery!!
When this item emerged via antique trade in May 2019 (it was offered as "British School"; "Portrait of unknown lady" - ??!), we instantly decided to purchase it. Like our web #42525, it is an absolutely authentic and very typical (see also our comparison images nr.20-22) work of one of Austria's best portrait artists of the 1st half of the 19th century - Carl Josef Alois Agricola. MOREOVER, this fantastic quality mid-1820s (note the sitter's dress and hairstyle) miniature is without any doubt a portrait of famous 19th-century ballet dancer (possibly the earliest of her existent portraits), Marie Taglioni. Her career began in Vienna. In this portrait, she is ca 20 years old.
Carl Josef Alois Agricola (1779 Saeckingen/Baden - 1852 Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian historical, portrait and miniaturist painter. He was born in Germany, began studying in Karlsruhe, moved to Vienna in 1798 and studied at the Viennese Academy under the famous Fueger. Agricola became a very popular portrait miniature artist and also made many historical and allegorical paintings. Especially known are his paintings with little children, a few of them can be seen at the Austrian National Gallery "Belvedere".
