Johann David Schubert (1761 Dresden - 1822 ibidem) was a son of an organ builder and graphic artist who died when the boy was 11. He studied at the Dresden Academy under Hutin and Casanova. From 1781 he was active as a battle painter, from 1786 as a drawing teacher. In 1795 he became chief painter of the porcelain manufactory Meissen. From 1801 he taught at the Dresden Academy. He is also known as author of numerous preparatoy drawings for illustrations in contemporary novels and pocket books (103 sheets in Berlin Kupferstich-Kabinett).
