This miniature on ivory, signed and dated - "Chapon /1837" - was (as we are fully convinced) executed in St. Petersburg - nothing is known about a possible stay of the depicted lady in Paris where miniaturist Hippolyte Chapon lived (according to his biography); nothing is known until today about a possible journey of this artist to Russia. Nevertheless, the miniature portrait of the Tsar's fliegel-adjutant Ivan Ivanovich Gogel, then just promoted (on 25th July) to colonel (now in St. Petersburg Hermitage - see our images nr.13-14) on which he is depicted in his military uniform (Russian officers were forbidden to wear their uniform out of Russia) executed by Chapon in the same year 1837 let us believe that both portraits - our one and that in the Hermitage - were made in St. Petersburg (additional argument: both sitters were closely connected with St. Petersburg court; obviously Chapon was commissioned exclusively by courtiers).

Our miniature shows the 26-year-old woman, at this point married since seven years, Vera Ivanovna Villie, nee Ruel (von Ruehl).
She was born in 1811, in St.Petersburg as a daughter of "leib-medik" (personal physician) of widowed Mother-Empress Maria Fedorovna, Ivan Fedorovich von Ruehl (in Russian spelling - Ruel; see our image nr.10).
On 17th September 1830, Vera Ivanovna married 16 years her senior "leib-medik" of Grand Duke Michail Pavlovich, Scotsman James Wylie, called in Russia Yakov Vasilievich Villie the 2nd (see our web # 43446) in St.Petersburg.
She gave birth to three children, one of whom, Michail Yakovlevich Villie became a celebrated Russian artist (see our web # 39248).
Vera Ivanovna outlived her husband by 42 years. After the death of the latter (in 1850) she lived with her son Michael in the house No. 65 on Nevski Prospect in St.Petersburg, inherited from her parents (see our image nr.11). She died there on 6th January 1893.

Hippolyte Chapon was born ca. 1790 in Switzerland. He is first mentioned in 1817 in Paris as "peintre en miniature et Cent-Suisse du Roi" ("Cent-Suisse" was a "Swiss Hundred Guard" engaged by the French Court).
Between 1832 and 1838 he was repeatedly mentioned as "Chapon, peintre en miniature, Palais-Royal, galerie de pierre (galerie Montpensier), no.65".
