As convincigly demonstrates the comparison of a close-up of our image nr.3 with those in an article of Roger Philips "William Naish and William Thick(e) revisited" which the latter published on 23rd January 2011 in his blog "A Private Portrait Miniature Collection" (CLICK HERE) it is a typical work of well-known English, late 18th century miniaturist William Naish.

The miniature is set into original golden locket with wonderful hairwork (sitter's hair!) on verso containing initials "AC" - surely the initial letters of the sitter's name!

William Naish was born in ca. 1767, in Axbridge, Somerset. He entered the Royal Academy Schools (London) on 28 November 1788, aged 21. He worked in London; had a large practice which included many of the theatrical profession. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1786-1800. For a time he was in Bristol. He is said to have died at his house in Leicester Square, late 1800. Examples of his works are in Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Our images nr.10-12 show several his miniatures which were sold in the last years at art auctions.

Provenance: auction house "Mitchells", Cockermouth, Cumbria / England, June 24th 2010, lot 695 (as "Officer of 5th Regiment of Foot ("Royal Northumberland Fusiliers")
