Executed by well-known Bohemian (Czech) miniaturist Antonin Bayer in ca. 1830, in Prague it is a very important portrait of one of the most celebrated women of Austrian high aristocracy, widowed Princess Marie Charlotte Caroline Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau, nee Freiin (daughter of Freiherr (baron)) von Kerpen (see our image nr.13 with another portrait of her from the same period).

Princess Marie Charlotte was born on 4th March 1782 in Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and died on 11th February 1841 in Vienna. She was a daughter of Freiherr (Baron) Anselm Franz Georg von Kerpen zu Illingen and his wife Maria Antoinetta, nee Hornstein-Goeffingen.
On 8th June 1801 in Prague she married one of the wealthiest Austrian aristocrats, Prince Ferdinand Kinsky von Wchinitz und Tettau. The latter (together with Prince von Lobkowitz and Archduke Rudolf) was a sponsor of composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
She gave birth to three children (the youngest died at the age of 3 years) before she was widowed in 1812 - her husband fell from a horse and died shortly afterward from the consequences of the accident.
Together with her brother-in-law, Count Franz Anton von Kolowrat-Liebsteinsky she became joint guardian over her two little sons.
In April 1816, Beethoven, who regularly claimed that his stipend amounts (promised by the aforementioned three sponsors) were delayed dedicated a song to the widow of one of them - Princess Marie Charlotte Kinsky (after a poem of Christoph August Tiedge) with a "hint" as its title: "An die Hoffnung" ("The Hope"; CLICK HERE and see our image nr.19). Still before this date he dedicated several other songs to her (in 1810 and 1811).

After 1824 Marie Charlotte became first lady of honor of Archduchess Sophie (mother of future Kaiser Franz Joseph). She was also awarded Austrian Ladies Order of Star Cross and title of "Palastdame" (lady of palace).

Antonin (Anton) Bayer was born in 1768 in Tannenberg (Svatá Anna / Böhmerwald) and died in 1833 in Prague. He studied from 1801 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and lived mainly in this city, with interruptions for Budapest (1821-23) and Vienna (ca. 1825). His clientele generally included members of aristocracy (especially families Thun and Nostitz) and artists.
