Ernst von Valentini (1759 Westerburg -1835 Detmold) was at first a librarian and then became a self-taught draftsman and silhouetist. After a rather long stay in Geneva where he perfected himself in painting and the miniature, he went to Turin where he did numerous miniatures and drawings in silverpoint heightened with watercolor at the Court of the King of Savoya, Victor Amadeus III. He made portraits of the King, as well as several members of his family. In 1786 and 1787 he was in Milan, Parma and Florence where he studied at the Academy. In Florence he did the portraits of the Grand Duke Leopold (later Emperor of Austria) and of his father. With the help of count Joseph Fries he perfected his art in Rome. In 1792 he was in Naples and in 1795 was appointed painter to Prince von Lippe in Detmold, a position which he held until 1820. Valentini travelled a lot in Germany and did portraits in numerous German courts. Some of his works were influenced by Fueger or Grassi.
