An authentic old legend on verso provides the identity of the depicted elderly lady from early 1780s (according to latter's dress) - "... /soeur de mon /oncle de gramont /d'aster". As "oncle" was surely meant general of the French Royal Army, well-known aristocrat Antoine Adrien Charles Prince de Gramont, comte d'Aster (1726-1762). The latter's (single!) sister was Marie Christine Chretienne, princess de Gramont (b. 1721) - our sitter!

Through information found online (see our images nr.7-9) we learn that in 1732 (in age of only 11 years!) she married "per contract" the 14 years her senior Yves-Marie-Joseph de Recouit, comte de Rupelmonde, baron de Wissenkercke, Royal officer, later "marechal-de-camp" (two-star-general). In 1741 she succeeded her mother-in-law as a "Dame du Palais" (CLICK HERE) of King Louis XV's consort Maria Leszynska. In 1745 she lost her father, General Louis VII de Gramont and her husband - both were killed on the battlefield. Some later she also lost her little son Louis. All this apparently prompted her to leave the Court and enter the Convent of the Carmelite nuns of Faubourg St-Germain in Paris, where she took the name "Soeur Thais Felicite de la Misericorde". She died in that convent in 1790.
It is probably the latest (and the only one existent today) portrait of this woman.
