SOLD!

Formerly in the property of Albrecht Sizzo, Count zu Solms-Wildenfels (1929-2010; Saxonian branch of famous German noble family Solms), it is a portrait of one of the members of Solms family - an aristocratic lady dressed in hunting costume corresponding (alike her hairstyle) to fashion of the early 1790s. In spring 2012 this work made its way to the auction house "Gallery Bassenge" in Berlin, where we acquired it on the 1st of June 2012 (see our image nr.11).
Painted by a first-class Saxonian artist (as we believe by Christian Leberecht Vogel (see below)), it is with almost 100% certainty a portrait of Countess Caroline Sophie Wilhelmine zu Solms-Wildenfels, nee Princess zu Leiningen-Dagsburg-Hartenberg (1757-1832; for genealogical information concerning her, see our image nr.12). In 1773, at the age of 16, she married Friedrich Magnus I, Count zu Solms-Wildenfels (1743-1801). The couple lived at Castle Wildenfels in Zwickauer Land (Saxonian Erzgebirge) and had six children - five sons (three died as infants) and one daughter.
Our image nr.14 shows a pastel portrait of Countess Caroline (made ca. 1784 by her court artist Christian Leberecht Vogel), which demonstrates a remarkable physiognomic similarity!

Christian Leberecht Vogel (1759 Dresden - 1816 ibidem) made a self-portrait in pastel at the age of 12, with which he drew attention of L.E. Schenau, and who took him up as his pupil. In 1780, at the invitation of Count Friedrich Magnus zu Solms-Wildenfels he came to Castle Wildenfels where he remained as the count's court portraitist and drawing teacher for his children until 1804. Through recommendation of the count, he obtained numerous commissions for portraits of members of other aristocratic families living in this area. In this period he also painted religious paintings of churches.
In 1804 he came back to Dresden, where he was appointed professor of the local academy in 1814.
Works of his are to see a.o. in Dresden Gallery.
