He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Applied Arts in 1950 and moved to Lviv, West Ukraine, where he lived and worked until his death in ca 1990. Sobolev was an art teacher at the Lviv School of Applied Arts in 1950-1954 and then again from 1963. Between 1954 and 1963 he taught at the Applied Arts College in Lviv. A.Sobolev was a very popular Russian-Ukrainian painter and applied artist (glass, ceramics) with numerous town, regional and republican exhibitions.
