In this portrait, the sitter - an elderly woman - is depicted while she is embroidering. The ligated monogram is probably that of her name.

Jacques-Antoine Barrois (1766 Reims - after 1811) studied from 1781, i.e. from the age of 15, at the Parisian Academy under Deshayes. His first known miniature portrait is dated with 1781. Barrois exhibited his miniatures at the Salon, debuting in 1791. He continued to take part at Salon exhibitions until 1795.
His works can be seen at the Louvre, Musée des arts décoratifs (Paris), Madrid Foundation Lazaro Galdiano, Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, USA), Scottish National Portrait Gallery, etc.
According to Mme Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard, we also know today of the artist's adventures in exotic countries until at least 1810. In addition, our colleagues at the French "Galerie Les Potraits en Miniature" have in their collection a miniature by Barrois dated 1811, with the mention of the place where it was executed - Port Louis (capital of Mauritius).
