Theodor Breitwiser (Breidwiser) was a very well-known Austrian painter and illustrator of the late 19th - early 20th century. He began his studies as lithograph artist under Carl Lanzedelly, then studied at the Vienna Academy (from 1866) under Eduard von Engerth. He mainly painted military scenes, but also genre pictures from popular life. Inspired by Nikolaus Lenau's poem " Die Drei " he painted the picture Austrian Uhlans on the march", which Archduke Ludwig purchased from him. Emperor Franz Joseph I also acquired a large number of Breitwieser's paintings, which made the artist popular in the Viennese court circles.
