Executed in 1801 by well-known Danish miniaturist Christian Horneman, it is a portrait of the artist's colleague, then a student of the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts, later the famous Norwegian portraitist Johan Görbitz (1782-1853; see our images nr. 7-8).

Christian Horneman (1765 Copenhagen - 1844 Copenhagen) was a pupil of the Academy of Copenhagen where he obtained prizes in 1785 and 1786. From 1786 to 1803 he travelled in Italy, Germany and Austria, exhibited in Berlin (1797), and made several portraits for the Prussian Court. From 1798 to 1803 Horneman lived in Vienna. Back in Denmark he became in 1805 member of the Academy and was appointed painter to the King of Denmark. Many of his miniatures are of a high artistic standard and, especially in the years after his return, can have an international touch. In Berlin he learned, probably from the painter Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki, the then popular drawing with silver pen on primed cardboard, a technique in which he achieved great skill and which he often used in Denmark. Here at home, he helped to fill the void in portrait art that arose after the deaths of Cornelius Høyer and Jens Juel. It is probably under the influence of Juel's pastels from around 1800 that he took up this medium a few years after his return home. From 1818 to 1842 the artist exhibited at the academical exhibitions in Copenhagen. His miniatures belong to collections of the Stockholm National Museum, Museum of Copenhagen, etc. He achieved great popularity in this field until competition from C.W. Eckersberg and C.A. Jensen, in connection with his failing health, knocked him out. He spent the last years of his life paralyzed in his legs in isolation in his residence at Charlottenborg. H. left behind a pedigree book, which is a source of great importance, not least for his traveling life.
